Warwickshire Scouts AGM
23 September 2026
Warwickshire Scouts held their AGM Kenilworth. A Gallantry Award was Presented to Police Sergeant Charlie Thompson who is Group Chair of the 1st Sydenham Scout Group. He was awarded the prestigious Bronze Cross for Gallantry – the Scouts’ highest award for extraordinary heroism – by Tim Cox, the Lord-Lieutenant. County lead volunteer, Paul Wakeley said:
Tonight we recognise the exceptional courage of Charlie Thompson, a Warwickshire police sergeant and Chair of 1st Sydenham Scout Group.
I am pleased to welcome Assistant Chief Constable Dafydd Goddard of Warwickshire Police to join us as well.
In April last year, Charlie faced a life-threatening situation at a petrol station in Stratford-upon-Avon. A man in crisis was threatening to set himself alight, placing himself and others in grave danger.
Charlie remained calm, working with colleagues to bring the incident to a safe conclusion. When intervention became necessary, he put his own life at risk, tackling the man so that fellow officers could remove the lighter and firefighters could make the scene safe.
Charlie has been quick to credit the team around him. Tonight, we honour his courage, compassion and willingness to put others first.
For his exceptional bravery, the Scout Association has awarded Charlie the Bronze Cross—its highest award for gallantry.
